Alyssa's 6th grade observations

Teacher x
-Music playing from teacher about what they're learning
-Student passes out papers for teacher
-Students sang along to the music
-Two students continued to look at us
-6 boys in back participated the most by blurting out
-One student on iPad, other students yelled at him for it
-PARTICIPATION !!!!!!!!!!!
-Got treats for correct answer
-Quiet when teacher is talking
-Kids stay on task and pay attention
-Has a student help with presentation
-One kid is distracting others
-Students all got right to work
-Teacher easily gets their attention
-Music played during work time

Shannon's 6th Grader Observations

Morning class
A few kids were Interested in there iPads than in the video that was playing
Kids are willing to sing along to the science song playing
Kids aren't afraid to tell others to get off there iPad
Kids seem willing to participate
One table Seems to talk often
Tricks kids in a creative way to help them stay interested
Kids eating snacks seem more interested than kids not eating

Some kids are working on there drawing while others are presenting
Kids are polite when giving warnings
Most kids look at the person presenting
When students are given work time they start working right away
Students know what there learning vs not paying attention and not caring

They had more definitions for the word they were describing

Shannon's 9th Grade Observations

I'm Shannon and these are my observations from when we went into a 9th grade class.
1. Class stayed working when people walked in the classroom
2. Sounded like most groups were working
3. Kids seem hard working within groups
4. 3 kids from all different groups kept talking to each other
5. Calmer than PBL (project based learning)
6. 1 group talked about random stuff, 1 group was fighting, and 1 wasn't talking at all
7. got distracted, most went back to work right away
8. Most groups seemed pretty comfortable with talking to there group members
9. asked reasonable questions
10. One person stopped the class for no reason
11. One group got almost nothing done
12. Students packed up early when they could have put more time into the creativity test

Alyssa's 9th Grade Observation

9th Grade Standard Class
-Group work
-One group (on couch) talking about random things, not what they're supposed to.
-Two groups were distracted by the music she was playing.
-Two students tried talking to us.
-The class continued to work when we walked in.
-One group fought twice.
-Calmer than our PBL class.
-One person was drawing- not doing their work.
-5 people were on their chromebooks.
-Only two groups were working hard.
-Class got distracted by a picture of a flying squirrel.
-One group wasn't talking to each other at all.
-Teacher had to talk to the same group twice, telling them to work.
-One group was on their phones.
-A few students were distracted by the singing challenge on Monday.
-One student yelled across the room to another student.
-Groups were talking quietly.
-Hardly any work was done.

Our Idea

Shannon and I plan on going to Tullar Elementary school on November 25th to observe the differences between the 6 grades there, and test their creativity. We want to test their creativity by giving every student in the grades kindergarten through second grade a sheet of paper that has 5 small circles on it, and give them two minutes to make whatever they want inside the circles. For the third graders through fifth graders we plan on giving them a sheet of paper with a mark on it, and they have to make whatever they can with it in 5 minutes. The students who draw something more elaborate and bigger are the students with more creativity. We also would like to to go to either Horace Mann or Shattuck and test and observe a class there. Then, we'd observe the classes at NHS and test their creativity as well. If the older students draw something more simple, we will know that their creativity has been dulled down throughout the years.

Overall, we think that standard schools are turning kids into little robots, controlling their every move and dulling their creativity. With Project Based Learning, however, their creativity is flowing, and everything is self-directed so the students can learn what they want, and bring what they learned to life in project form, showing their creative side. With us observing the different grades and testing their creativity, we will know whether school is dulling creativity or not.
